A man is in custody after two State Bureau of Investigation agents were injured during an explosion early Friday in Sampson County, authorities said.
Jimmy Tyndall, 33, was being held on several charges including larcency, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and mephedone possession. He was being held on a bond of $151,000 at the Sampson County Jail.
The Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said authorities conducted a traffic stop in Spivey’s Corner on Tyndall’s vehicle when they found the explosives.
Authorities found at least one pipe bomb in the vehicle and called the SBI’s bomb squad.
Assistant Special Agent in Charge Timothy Luper and Special Agent Brian Joy were working to neutralize the bombs when the explosion occurred Friday morning, the SBI said.
Joy airlifted to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill and was in critical condition, the SBI said. Luper was also taken to the burn center and was in stable condition.
One person had been arrested, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities were investigating at JV Farm Lane in Dunn later Friday morning.
