Traffic was reduced to one lane westbound on Dixon Boulevard Friday morning.
An incident involving an 18-wheeler spilled white paint on the highway, reducing the lanes of travel and shutting down access to Wal-Mart and other stores in the shopping center. The spill occurred around 8 a.m., according to N.C. Department of Transportation.
According to Shelby Police Department, the driver of the truck misjudged the distance to the light, stopped short and a container holding 275 gallons of paint came crashing into the intersection.
N.C. Highway Patrol issued a violation to the driver from Grubhill Transport for failing to restrain his load.
N.C. DOT workers shoveled sand around and onto the waterbased paint as they waited for a hazmat crew to arrive and finish the cleanup.
Wal-Mart reportedly opened a back entrance to the store parking lot to allow drivers access.
The cleanup finished shortly before 3 p.m.
