50 residents evacuated in Texas during narcotics investigation

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) The Killeen Police Department evacuated nearly 50 residents during a hazmat and narcotics investigation near Peebles Elementary School Saturday.

According to investigators, the source of the odor was old fuel coming from a ruptured fuel tank.

“Once they arrived they did detect a strong odor coming from a residence in that vicinity,” said spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez.

“So as officers were patrolling, trying to determine where the odor was coming from, they were able to locate the odor coming from a residence on Connell Street.”

Police said narcotics team arrived at the home off Connell Street just after 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

They said a strong odor was detected and a hazmat crew was called in.

Police blocked off a large portion of the neighborhood surrounding the home from Davis Street to Ruiz Drive and down Peebles Drive.

Police said 50 residents were evacuated and were taken to the Gilmore Center.

They were allowed back inside their homes around 4 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
