According to CBS46:
CARTERSVILLE, GA (CBS46) –
Fire investigators in Bartow County are still looking into what sparked billowing black smoke at Chemical Products Corporation in Cartersville.
An operator of the plant that makes paper products heard a pop and then saw the smoke at about 9:30 Wednesday morning.
The fire chief told CBS46 what was in the air turned out not to be a health threat but authorities wanted people to shelter in place just in case.
“Officer Kyle teams came in and told us to make sure that we cut off our heating and air units so the smoke wouldn’t get sucked into the building,” said Hope Cigainero, a waitress at Doug’s Place restaurant in Cartersville.
A company spokesman told CBS46 they have a very good record in terms of employee safety and general safety.
But when CBS46 checked federal records, we discovered the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has leveled several violations and several thousand dollars in fines against the company during the last ten years.
