HazMatters: Lawrence County Ohio

HazMatters: Lawrence County, Ohio

Today, on this installment of “HazMatters” We take a look inside the operations of the Lawrence County, Ohio HAZMAT responders. These responders located in the city of Ironton, serve a population of 62,450. All 26 members of the HazMat team are also crossed staffed to other apparatus.

What makes their response area unique are the many different industrial facilities in the vicinity. Some of the industries include a Polystyrene production facility, Phenol production facilities, and petroleum product transmission pipelines. All of which are near active US highways and shipping routes.

When it comes to training, they do their fair share jointly with local agencies. Including the Marathon Petroleum industrial fire services, Ohio fire academy, Cleveland State University, and even the Kentucky Fire Commission.

The team rolls a 2007 F-350 Crew cab with utility bed, a 20 foot enclosed trailer with passenger side awning and climate control, two 14 foot enclosed trailers, containing portable cascade system, and a Zumbro inflatable decon system.

HazSim Pro training system has been used to train across the U.S since 2011. Trainers in HazMat and Confined Space realized that ‘tapping the student on the shoulder’ was NOT effective training. This system uses NO hazardous materials and although may not look exactly like your front line meter, shows the important data which the all students needs to learn to ‘react’ to.
