N.C. crews respond to vehicle fire with HAZMAT involved

HMN- WLOS reports that crews are responding to a vehicle fire on I-40 that involves hazardous materials.  The vehicle contained chlorine and other corrosive cleaning materials.

MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Crews are responding after a vehicle carrying cleaning materials caught fire along Interstate 40.

McDowell County Emergency Services says they received a call at 9:47 a.m about a vehicle fire between mile markers 69-70 on Old Fort Mountain on Thursday.

The vehicle was carrying cleaning materials which contained chlorine and corrosives.

One lane of traffic is currently moving along I-40 east. Travelers should expect delays in the area.

Old Fort Fire Department, McDowell County Emergency Management, NCSHP, McDowell Sheriff’s Office, NCDOT, and NC Hazmat Team 6 is currently on the scene managing the incident.

County officials said two other incidents are also causing travel delays on I-40 westbound from mile markers 73-78.
