PAYSON, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) – No fatalities are reported after an explosion and huge fire in Payson.

Earlier, the Payson Regional Dispatch Center said they had confirmed fatalities. But a later update from the Phoenix Fire Dept. reported that there were no fatalities. Fire officials say the reports were due to initial confusion from the scene.

Injuries remain unknown.

The Payson Fire Department says there was a gas explosion around 8 p.m. at a four-unit apartment complex.

The entire structure went up in flames.

“I could feel the heat from where I was parked,” said witness Michael Wicks, who sent us photos and video that gave us our first look at the flames.

Crews from several cities are responding with fire trucks, and multiple ambulances were called to the scene.

Witnesses reported hearing a large explosion and seeing flames.

“It was loud; rattled my windows,” reported one witness who heard the explosion.

ADOT tweeted that part of SR 87 was blocked due to fire trucks in the area.

The Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter is sending in assistance for those affected by the fire.
