HMN-The chemicals involved currently are Ferric Sulfate, and Sodium Hypochlorite
Over 50 people were transported to regional hospitals following a chemical spill at a Birmingham Water Works facility near Hwy 280.
The incident began around 9:30 a.m. at the Shades Mountain Filter Plant when two chemicals (Ferric Sulfate and Sodium Hypochlorite) mixed and created a toxic gas. 14 contractors at the site and one BWW employee were transported after the incident with additional people taken for precautionary evaluation. A Birmingham Water Works representative says none of the injuries are life-threatening.
Hwy 280 between Shades Creek Parkway and Green Valley Road are now reopen.
A shelter in place directive given earlier by Birmingham Fire is no longer in effect. Water in the are was not impacted by the chemical reaction.
Birmingham Water Works says they will conduct a full investigation into the incident.
