Overturned 18 wheeler transporting chemicals shuts down roadway, 2nd vehicle requiring extrication to remove driver

EASLEY, S.C. (WSPA) — Authorities say a tractor trailer hauling a chemical overturned after sideswiping a pickup truck in Easley.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 123 near SC 124.

Lance Cpl. Joe Hovis with the S.C. Highway Patrol said the tractor trailer driver crossed a center line and sideswiped a pickup truck.

The pickup truck driver was taken to a hospital.

Hovis said the driver’s injuries are not life threatening.

Pickens County Emergency Management Deputy Director Pierce Womack said the driver was entrapped in the wreckage.

Emergency responders, including firefighters, are on the scene. Hazmat also responded.

Womack said the 18 wheeler driver was hauling a chemical similar to latex in liquid form. He said the chemical has not leaked and there’s no threat to the public.

The 18 wheeler overturned off the road.

Lanes are expected to remain blocked for some time.

Highway 123 from Greenville into Easley is down to one lane, while Highway 124 is completely shut down, Womack said.

Detours have been set up.
