Port Canaveral – Emergency response members from several Florida response agencies met to improve their skills through table-top training exercises involving response to a hazardous materials incident driven by a suspected environmental crime. The challenging training was delivered by Emergency Response Educators and Consultants EREC, a Florida based training company specializing in providing training to prepare first responders. The Tabletop Exercise was designed to acquaint and coordinate the activities of Environmental Response Team (ERT) members and the local first responders with responsibilities, mutual roles, and policies and procedures. First responders from U.S. Coast Guard, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and local Fire and Law enforcement met at the Florida Port Authority to enhance interagency coordination and cooperation. Participants in the drill were also challenged by realistic hazardous atmosphere readings through the use of a HazSim, hazardous materials simulation system.  The drill was considered a success with students improving their skills and learning the capabilities of each others teams.  A full scale exercise is planned later in the year. – HMN
