Bomb squad and FBI officials were investigating an explosion in a truck that occurred at an off-site parking lot for John Wayne Airport on Tuesday, Dec. 11, with Orange County sheriff’s officials saying the explosion appeared to be a suicide attempt.
Sometime after 7:30 a.m. the explosion was reported at the Main Street Parking lot across the I-405 Freeway from the airport. “It looks like it was possibly an explosion from propane tanks,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Carrie Braun.
Braun added that there was a man injured inside who was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He is not an employee of the airport, and the incident was not related to the airport’s operations, she said. The explosion was contained to the truck in the open-air parking area. Airport spokeswoman Deanne Thompson said the incident at the lot between Redhill Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard did not impact flights, traffic or parking.
