Weed killer spill prompted hazmat call

MANSFIELD – Hazardous materials crews responded to a spill of 100 gallons of weed killer Thursday morning at the city garage on Park Avenue East.

According to Mansfield fire Chief Steve Strickling, a contractor for Norfolk & Southern Railroad was spraying weed killer when a hose came loose and spilled the chemical. Some of it got into a nearby drain and the Rocky Fork. Officials said it should not be dangerous because the chemical dilutes in water.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was called.
Crews were working to dam the area around the spill. Strickling said the EPA was on site with its cleanup team and the release into the stream was stopped. Samples were taken.
