Chattanooga Fire Department officials say a four-inch natural gas main was damaged along Highland Avenue, forcing the evacuation of nearly two dozen homes on Wednesday evening.

It happened around 5:15 p.m. in the 4600 block.

CFD spokesperson Lindsey Rogers says a Tennessee American Water Company crew was repairing a water main break when a gas main was damaged, causing a significant leak.

Rogers says firefighters evacuated surrounding homes as a safety precaution, spanning two blocks.

The evacuees were taken to the South Chattanooga Recreation Center for temporary shelter but were later allowed back in their homes after they were deemed safe by firefighters.
