Founded in 2000, Stockholm, Sweden’s dedicated hazmat team is made up of seven members who are also firefighters within the city.
The team trains at least once a week for hazmat incidents. They also participate in regular firefighter training. At times, the team trains with other departments.
The hazmat team is part of a much larger municipal fire organization that extends beyond Stockholm’s borders.
The greater Stockholm’s fire brigade is a municipal association with 10 cooperating municipalities. These are: Danderyd, Lidingö, Solna, Stockholm, Sundbyberg, Täby, Vallentuna, Vaxholm, Värmdö and Österåker.
The brigade protects 1.4 million people. Through cooperation agreements, we are responsible for alarms and management of rescue operations in a total of 31 municipalities in Uppland, parts of Södermanland, Västmanland and on Gotland.
The operations include 16 fire stations and 10 fire brigades. In addition to a hazmat team, they have rescue diving and an international rapid response force.
