Port Protector 2024: LAFD and Long Beach Fire Team Up for Hazmat Training

Last week, Los Angeles Fire Department’s Hazmat Task Force 48 joined Long Beach Fire’s Hazmat 24 and Hazmat 19 for the Port Protector 2024 exercise at the Port of Los Angeles. This joint training simulated a hazardous materials incident involving a toxic chemical release from a container ship, putting the teams’ response capabilities to the test.

Key Objectives
The exercise focused on:
– Inter-agency Coordination: Ensuring smooth collaboration between teams.
– Hazmat Response: Testing detection, containment, and mitigation techniques.
– Port Challenges:  Addressing the unique risks of a port environment.

Highlights
The teams demonstrated their skills in detecting and containing hazardous substances while navigating confined spaces aboard a vessel. Their teamwork and use of specialized equipment were key in managing the scenario, reinforcing the importance of regional collaboration in high-stakes emergencies.

Port Protector 2024 showcased the expertise of LAFD and Long Beach Fire, ensuring they are ready to protect the port and surrounding areas from future hazmat threats.
