HMN - Disinfectant spray meant to fight coronavirus sickens Florida residents, dogs: report

A property manager continued to douse a Florida community with disinfectant spray meant to sanitize against coronavirus, despite complaints pouring in from residents saying the chemicals were making them sick and requiring some dogs to be hospitalized, according to a news report.

The spraying of the Virex Plus One disinfectant began March 12 on Brickell Key by workers in hazmat suits, The Miami Herald reported.

Dozens of condo residents on the island began to complain of “stomach cramps, headaches, rashes, eye irritations and nausea” and pet dogs also got sick, the Herald reported.

Employees in the main office told residents the disinfectant was approved by the Center for Biocide Chemistries and considered safe, according to the report.

But “complaints continued, and the association said it switched to a Clorox-based solution on April 10 when supplies of Vitrex ran out,” the Herald reported.

The manufacturer, Diversey, wrote to the Herald in an email that it was likely animals were ingesting the product, which contains ammonium chloride, before it dried.

The company said Virex Plus One isn’t supposed to be used outside or on porous surfaces like concrete sidewalks.
