Gas leak in Alameda forces evacuations

The leak, caused by a construction crew, was stopped in about a half-hour.

ALAMEDA — A ruptured gas line Wednesday morning forced the temporary evacuation of some residents and businesses, authorities said.

The 1 1/4-inch underground gas line was ruptured about 8:30 a.m. by a construction crew working in the 700 block of Buena Vista  Avenue, authorities said.

Numerous residents and businesses in the surrounding area, including  Constitution Way, Eagle Avenue and Eighth Street were evacuated as a precaution.  Numerous streets were also blocked off by police.

Firefighters were on the scene as a precaution and PG&E crews had the leak stopped by 9 a.m., officials said.

No injuries were reported.
