BELLEVILLE, Ill. – A hazmat team was called to the St. Clair County Courthouse in Belleville, Illinois at about 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.
Captain Bruce Fleshren of the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department said when personnel opened a package Tuesday morning they found that it contained a “powdery substance.” The personnel then left the area and called the Sheriff’s Department.
The Belleville Fire Department Hazmat Team arrived at the scene Tuesday to assess the “package for any hazardous materials and to decontaminate the scene if needed.”
Fleshren said the fire department has determined that the contents of the package is not hazardous and turned out to be onion salt.
There were no injuries, threats, or evacuation.
The investigation is ongoing to discover where the package came from.
