3 outside contractors were reportedly injured during a high-pressure release of a cylinder containing chlorine dioxide, according to a statement from ASU.
PHOENIX — Tempe Fire and Medical responded to a HAZMAT situation in an Arizona State University building on Tuesday morning, according to a tweet from Tempe Police.
ASU police said a lab injury happened at the Biodesign A building at 1001 S. McAllister Avenue around 11:30 a.m.
Three people were injured, including a 50-year-old person and 27-year-old person with serious injuries. Those injured are outside contractors and are not students or staff members.
The injuries were reportedly caused by a high-pressure release of a cylinder containing chlorine dioxide, according to a statement from ASU.
They were injured by shrapnel after a “lab injury,” according to investigators.
The floor of the building the laboratory is located on was evacuated as a precaution, according to an ASU spokesperson.
The incident is under investigation.
