WORCESTER – A bag containing white powder found outside the emergency department at UMass Memorial Medical Center’s University Campus Monday night triggered a call to the state Department of Fire Services.

The call for the incident came in at 5:17 p.m. and “out of an abundance of caution” Worcester fire officials requested a Tier 1 hazmat response, Worcester Deputy Fire Chief Martin Dyer said.

A Tier 1 response is for the least threatening of hazardous materials incidents.

Fire crews were on scene for nearly two hours. Dyer said the suspicious bag was found to contain “a small amount of baking soda.”
