Poison Center: Carbon monoxide poisonings spike in January

HANNIBAL (WGEM) — Carbon Monoxide is often dubbed ‘The Silent Killer.’

The colorless, odorless, tasteless gas can kill very quickly, and often before victims even notice something is wrong.

The Missouri Poison Center is highlighting carbon monoxide safety during the month of January, which they say is the worst month of the year for carbon monoxide poisonings.

Among safety tips offered, they recommend CO detectors on each level of your home within 10 feet of sleeping areas, and checking batteries once during the spring and fall.

Along with that, safety advocates like Tom Dugger, with Families and Communities Together in Hannibal, highlight the danger that gas-powered appliances and generators pose when not used correctly.

“Make sure people are aware that carbon monoxide poisoning can happen,” said Dugger.

“We usually don’t know that it’s happening, so just be cautious. Don’t run any kind of gasoline equipment inside your house. If you lose power and you have a generator, make sure that generator is outside.”

The Missouri Poison Center will be holding a Facebook Live discussion on January 13th for a discussion on the topic. To be a part of the discussion, all you have to do it go to the Missouri Poison Center Facebook page.
